Graduate Certificate In Leadership and Theology (36)


The Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology is aimed at providing graduates with insights into leadership in Catholic education, healthcare, ministry, social services and church administration.
The course is tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals in Catholic organisations through its emphasis upon linking professionally relevant practices around leadership directly to the everyday mission of faith communities in a pluralistic society.
Graduates may enhance their career opportunities and may also be able to use their qualification to fulfil professional accreditation requirements with Catholic employers.

Course Structure

The Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology comprises three compulsory units (27 points) and one elective unit (9 points).

Category Requirements
Course Length Six months full-time, or one-year part-time equivalent, comprising 36 credit points. Maximum duration two years.
Admission Requirements
  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline from an approved tertiary education institution.
  • English-language proficiency.
Entry pathways
  • Students who have completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline may enter the Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology.
Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning
  • Students who have completed prior studies in leadership and theology may be eligible for credit. If these studies were at the same AQF level as this course, up to 2 units, or 18 cps, of credit will be considered according to the SCD’s Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning policy.
  • No credit will be given for Recognition of Prior Learning in this Program.

Credit
The Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology articulates to the Graduate Diploma of Leadership and Theology, which articulates to the Master of Leadership and Theology. Credit will be granted in higher awards for all units completed within lower awards.

Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology (72)


The Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology aims to strengthen the career prospects of graduates in Catholic education, healthcare, ministry, social services and church administration. It allows students who have completed the SCD Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology to extend their learning.

SCD/BBI-TAITE is the only tertiary education institution in Australia to combine leadership and theology in an integrated award course. This unique approach helps equip graduates with the skills to apply their knowledge of leadership practices directly to the context of everyday mission of Catholic organisations.

Course Structure

The Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology comprises three compulsory units (27 cps) and five core unit (45 cps).

Course Length One year full-time, or two years part-time equivalent, comprising 72 credit points. Maximum duration four years.
Admission Requirements
  • • An undergraduate degree in any discipline from an approved tertiary education institution, or the SCD’s Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology.
  • English-language proficiency.

  • Students who have completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline from an approved tertiary institution may enter the Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology.
Credit Transfer
  • Students who have completed prior studies in leadership and theology may be eligible for credit. If these studies were at the same AQF level as this course, up to 4 units, or 36 cps, of credit will be considered according to the SCD’s Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning policy.
  • No credit will be given for Recognition of Prior Learning in this Program.

Through the Master of Leadership and Theology graduates can apply knowledge concerning Catholic identity and mission directly to professional leadership contexts. It is tailored to meet the needs of those aspiring to, or who already hold leadership roles in areas such as Catholic education, healthcare or social services.

The course enables students who hold the SCD Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology or the SCD Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology to extend their study in these disciplines. In addition, through the Master of Leadership and Theology award, students have an opportunity to complete a Capstone Project, under the guidance of a skilled supervisor, in a specific area of interest to them.

Categories Requirements
Course Length Two years full-time, or four-years part-time equivalent comprising 144 credit points. Maximum duration eight years.
Admission Requirements
  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline from an approved tertiary education institution, or the SCD’s Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology or Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology.
  • Desirable but not mandatory – at least two years’ experience in a leadership role in an area aligned with the course’s focus. For example: church leadership; educational leadership within a religious school; ministry; social services provided by a religious organisation.
  • English-language proficiency.
Entry pathways
  • Students who have completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline from an approved tertiary education institution will complete the full 16-unit Master of Leadership and Theology
  • Students may enter the Master of Leadership and Theology directly or via the SCD Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology or the Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology. In both cases, students will receive full credit for the units they completed within the previous qualification in accordance with the SCD’s Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (for example, students who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology, which is 4 units in length, would receive credit for these units and then complete the Master of Leadership and Theology in 12 units).
  • Students who have completed prior studies in the areas of leadership or theology may be eligible for credit if these studies were at the same AQF level as this course. Credit will be considered according to the SCD’s Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning policy. Given the specific nature of this course and its goal of integrating leadership and theology, no block credit will be awarded for a Level 7 undergraduate degree in the area of leadership. Students who have completed a Level 7 undergraduate degree in the area of theology will be exempt from THEO800 and may select an alternate core unit in its place.
Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning
  • Up to 8 units of credit (72 cps) are available in this course in accordance with the SCD’s Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.
  • Students who have held a leadership position for two or more years may be eligible for up to 36 cps in Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Applicants for RPL must submit a performance portfolio and letter of support from their employer which demonstrate how their work relates to the following Course Specific Graduate Outcomes:
    1. The ability to demonstrate a high level of skill in the leadership of self, others, systems, and learning.
    2. Clear communication of complex ideas related to leadership and theology to a variety of professional and non-professional audiences, including by using new and emerging technologies.
    3. A capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively, and with a willingness to take responsibility for their own work.
