Graduate Certificate In Leadership and Theology (36)


The Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology is aimed at providing graduates with insights into leadership in Catholic education, healthcare, ministry, social services and church administration.

The course is tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals in Catholic organisations through its emphasis upon linking professionally relevant practices around leadership directly to the everyday mission of faith communities in a pluralistic society.

Graduates may enhance their career opportunities and may also be able to use their qualification to fulfil professional accreditation requirements with Catholic employers.

Course Structure

The Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology comprises three compulsory units (27 points) and one elective unit (9 points).

Course Length 0.5 years full-time, or part-time equivalent, amounting to 40 credit points.
Admission Requirements
  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline from an approved tertiary education institution.
  • English-language proficiency.
Entry pathways
  • Students who have completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline may enter the Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology.
  • Students who have completed prior studies in the areas of leadership or theology may be eligible for credit.
  • If these studies were at the same AQF level as this course, credit will be considered according to the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning policy.
Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning

The Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology is aimed at strengthening the career prospects of graduates in Catholic education, healthcare, ministry, social services and church administration.

The course will also allow students who have completed the BBI Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology to extend on their learning.

BBI is the only tertiary education institution in Australia to combine leadership and theology in an integrated awards course. This unique approach helps equip our graduates with the skills to apply their knowledge of leadership practices directly to the context of everyday mission of Catholic organisations.

Course Structure

The Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology comprises three Core units (27 points) and five elective units (45 points).

Course Length 1 year full-time, or part-time equivalent, amounting to 72 credit points.
Admission Requirements
  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline from an approved tertiary education institution.
  • English-language proficiency.
Entry Pathways
  • Students who have completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline may enter the Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology.
  • Students who have completed prior studies in the areas of leadership or theology may be eligible for credit.
  • If these studies were at the same AQF level as this course, credit will be considered according to the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning policy.
Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning
  • Up to 40 units of credit are available in this course in accordance with the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

Graduates can apply knowledge around Catholic identity and mission directly to professional leadership contexts, through this course.

The course is tailored to meet the needs of those aspiring to or who already hold leadership roles in areas such as Catholic education, healthcare or social services.

The course also enables students who hold the BBI Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology or Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology to extend their study in these disciplines.

Through the Master’s award, students also have an opportunity to complete a Capstone Project in a specific area of interest to them under the guidance of a skilled supervisor.

Course Length 2 years full-time, or part-time equivalent, amounting to 144 credit points.
Admission Requirements
  • An undergraduate degree in any discipline from an approved tertiary education institution.
  • Desirable but not mandatory – at least two years’ experience in a leadership role in an area aligned with the course’s focus, for example: church leadership; educational leadership within a religious school; ministry; social services provided by a religious organisation.
  • English-language proficiency.
Entry pathways
  • Students who have completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline from an approved tertiary education institution will complete the full 16 unit Master of Leadership and Theology course.
  • Students may enter the Master of Leadership and Theology directly, or enter the nested BBI Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology or Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Theology. In both cases, students will receive full credit for the units they completed within the previous qualification in accordance with the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (for example, students who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Theology, which is 4 units in length, would receive credit for these units and then complete the Master of Leadership and Theology in 12 units).
  • Students who have completed prior studies in the areas of leadership or theology may be eligible for credit if these studies were at the same AQF level as this course. Credit will be considered according to the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning policy. Given the specific nature of this course and its goal of integrating leadership and theology, no block credit will be awarded for a Level 7 undergraduate degree in the area of leadership. Students who have completed a Level 7 undergraduate degree in the area of theology will be exempt from THEO800 and may select an elective in its place.
Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning
  • Up to 80 units of credit are available in this course in accordance with the Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.
  • Students who have held a leadership position for two or more years may be eligible for up to 40 credit points in Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Applicants for RPL must submit a performance portfolio and letter of support from their employer which demonstrate how their work relates to the following Course Specific Graduate Outcomes:
  1. The ability to demonstrate a high level of skill in the leadership of self, others, systems, and learning.
  2. Clear communication of complex ideas related to leadership and theology to a variety of professional and non-professional audiences, including by using new and emerging technologies.
  3. A capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively, and with a willingness to take responsibility for their own work.
